Digital products and systems are ubiquitous in healthcare. Their introduction has accelerated over the last 10-15 years. We know that many patients are harmed during their interactions with healthcare organisations and that the rate of adverse events has not moved significantly in that time. What evidence is there that patient safety benefits from digitisation? Or is it possible that we are less safe, now that we are reliant on such systems?

Dr DJ Hamblin-Brown qualified as a doctor in the UK in 1996 and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM). He is the CEO of CAREFUL, a clinical coordination platform, and has extensive experience as an emergency physician and healthcare leader. He served as the vice president of medical affairs at United Family Healthcare in Beijing and was previously group medical director for Aspen Healthcare in the UK. While at Aspen, DJ developed the STEP-up programme, which aims to engage all staff in improving patient safety. He has worked in leadership advisory roles, promoting compassionate yet rigorous healthcare leadership, and is committed to improving healthcare systems globally.
